The state government declared a holiday for schools in Chennai and six other districts on Monday, 19 June, in view of the inclement weather. According to the Regional Meteorological Department, Chennai recorded moderate thunderstorm with moderate rain in isolated places on Monday morning. The department also issued a yellow alert for Chennai and other coastal districts for the next two days, indicating heavy rain at isolated places. The heavy rain was caused by a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is likely to intensify into a depression by Tuesday. The low-pressure area is expected to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu coast between Nagapattinam and Chennai by Tuesday evening.
